About Howden Show
Howden Show is an annual agricultural show organised by a small committee of local volunteers.
The Howden Show has deep roots in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a tradition that stretches back over two centuries. Agricultural shows have been a part of Howden life since at least 1808, when the town’s Agricultural Society held its first events alongside the Spring Fair. In 1855, the newly formed Floral and Horticultural Society hosted its first exhibition in the picturesque grounds beside the Bishop’s Manor House.
By 1862, these two societies combined their efforts, holding a joint event that marked the beginning of the Howden Show as we know it today—a celebration of agriculture, horticulture, and rural community life. The event quickly became a highlight of the local calendar, drawing in crowds with its livestock displays, produce competitions, crafts, and entertainment.
Though the show was paused during both World Wars, it returned with strength each time—most notably in 1948, when the 69th show went ahead despite storms and muddy grounds. In the decades that followed, it was often affectionately known as the “Howden Flower Show,” and even expanded to a two-day event in the grounds of Howden School.
In 2007, the show returned to its historic home at The Ashes, reclaiming its one-day format and reaffirming its place as a cherished summer tradition. Today, the Howden Show continues to showcase the very best of rural life—honouring its rich heritage while embracing the community spirit that has defined it for generations.
